Nepeta cataria, Catnep, Catnip

Genus: Nepeta
Clusters of small pale pinkish white tubular flowers. Pungent, aromatic grey green, toothed oval leaves. Culinary; the leaves and flowers are edible. The leaves are good in stuffings and marinades.
Characteristics:
Catnep can be seen at the herb farm in Jekka’s Herbetum and is available to buy as both herb plants and online as herb seeds.

Growing
• Indoor Sowing: In spring, into prepared plug trays or pots, cover the seeds with perlite.
• Outdoor Sowing: In early summer, into a free draining soil in sun or light shade. Thin to 50cm apart.
Medicinal
Catnip, beloved of cats is also very much regarded as a herb for humans. It has been used traditionally for colds and flu to reduce temperature in fevers and as a gentle relaxant for children when they are feeling upset. Herbalists regard it as also being effective to ease stomach upsets, bouts of colic, diarrhoea and indigestion in both children and in adults.
