Medicinal
Mint hybrids have been grown in the UK for at least 400 years but this herb has been in use from far earlier than this. Dioscorides is reputed to have worn sprigs of mint to raise his spirits. The instantly recognisable scent of mint arises from the high concentration of volatile oils held within its leaves. The leaf has been traditionally used by herbalists to ease poor digestion and nausea. A hot cup of peppermint tea is a welcome comfort for an upset stomach, and also for when the feverishness of a cold strikes. For a headache, the oil can be mixed with a little carrier oil and applied to the forehead where it is said to help ease the discomfort.
Caution: Do not use for children below 5yrs old. Do not take essential oils internally unless under the guidance of a herbal or medical practitioner.
